Do you know why so many people try to lose weight and fail miserably?

Weight loss is a tough, and daunting task. And we need to approach it from the right angle. What I mean by that is weight loss starts in our digestive system. I just want you to pause for a second and let this sink in.

A properly functioning digestive system means your body is getting the nutrients it needs more easily, so it doesn’t tend to stimulate hunger as much.

A poor functioning digestive system means you may eat a lot of food but not get the important minerals, vitamins and other nutrients you need. Your body knows it requires these substances to operate effectively and stimulates more hunger in an attempt to get them. And you end up eating more food which converts to body fat. And on top of that, your body is filled with waste and toxins from all these years of not detoxing.

Losing weight can be beneficial to your health, but you need to approach weight loss in the most effective manner. You need to focus on what you’re consuming, break this weight gain cycle by getting your digestive system work properly to absorb the nutrition you need and reducing the amount of hunger you feel due to a lack of nutrition. And here is the question – How To Do It? A healthy diet backed by Triphala.

What Is Triphala?

Triphala is an herbal supplement derived from the fruit of three trees found in India and the Middle East. The fruits are dried, pulverized and mixed according to the Indian millennial tradition of healing known as Ayurveda. The healing properties of Triphala attracted the attention of Western medical researchers who were looking for new therapeutic compounds to treat a number of health conditions.

“No mother? Do not worry, so long as you have Triphala.” – Indian Folk Saying

A traditional Ayurvedic remedy for gentle gut cleansing, Triphala is made from three traditional Indian fruits: Haritaki, Amla and Bibhtaki.

It is believed that the first fruits promote digestion and treat acute and chronic constipation. The second is believed to increase gastric emptying and has antimicrobial properties. The third source of protein, oil, and linoleic acid, omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Haritaki

Haritaki is a large tree that grows throughout the deciduous forests of Southern Asia and Sri Lanka. Ayurveda uses the small green fruits of the Haritaki tree, and harvesting these is not easy. It requires a skilled tree climber to hand-pick each fruit. Haritaki has the ability to support healthy digestion, particularly for those who tend toward digestive imbalances, such as gas, bloating and variable appetite.

Most of the evidence for Haritaki’s health effects comes from preliminary animal-based research and laboratory studies. A 2010 study from the Journal of Advanced Pharmaceutical Technology & Research, for instance, determined that Haritaki helped reduce total cholesterol in mice.

Haritaki consists of ingredients which are recognized to have healing properties including anticancer, antibacterial, antidiabetic and anti-oxidant properties. Haritaki is very nutritious containing essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins. It is a source of vitamin C manganese, selenian, potassium, iron and copper. It also contains plant chemicals like – tannic acid, gallic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and behenic acid.

Amla

Triphala, benefits,Ayurveda, weight loss, digestive system, detox,Haritaki,Amla,Bibhtaki, laxative,Triphala tea,Triphala PowderAmla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on Earth. Though unfamiliar to many, particularly in Western countries, powdered and dried amla fruit is commonly used in Ayurvedic herbal preparations. In vitro studies have shown that amla may have anticancer properties and not only appear able to block cancer cell growth, but also cancer cell invasion. Clinical research has also shown that amla powder may work as well as a leading diabetes drug—without the side effects. Indian gooseberries have also been found to have cholesterol-lowering and cough-, fever-, pain-, stress-, and diarrhea-suppressing effects.

Bibhtaki (Terminalia Bellirica)

This small, dry fruit has a specific drying, astringing and strengthening action on the mucous membranes throughout the body, especially in the lungs, intestines and urinary system. Bibhitaki is a naturally strong astringent, toning mucous membranes throughout the body, with a particularly strong effect within the digestive tract, improving peristaltic motion. It has also demonstrated the ability to reduce lipid volume in the bloodstream, impacting upon blood cholesterol levels and heart health. Bibhitaki contains a small portion of cardiac glycosides which, alongside its ability to reduce lipid congestion, protect the functioning of the heart.

Asthma, bronchitis, cough, laryngitis, sore throat, dental problems, skin healing, premature graying and hair loss. It clears congestion from the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. Also indicated for helping to maintain hair growth.

Helps with diarrhea, colitis, Crohn’s disease, intestinal inflammation, parasites, bladder stones, and insomnia. Its cardiac glycoside content and ability to reduce stagnant congestion indicate its use for cardiac congestion and insufficiency.

Remarkable Benefits of Triphala

Triphala is useful for constipation, obesity, reducing belly fat, cleansing the body, “indigestion”, “lazy stomach syndrome” and other abdominal problems.
  • Amalaki works as a natural antioxidant and removes excess inflammation from the body. It also helps to increase lean body mass and maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
  • Haritaki supports the body’s natural cleansing process by gently removing toxins that accumulate in the colon.
  • Bibhitaki is particularly effective in reducing the accumulation of fat and fluids in the body.

Each one of these herbal preparations has tremendous value on its own. However, when they’re combined in the form of Triphala, they work as an even more powerful tool to detoxify the body and help you achieve your ideal weight.

Weight Loss Effect

The health benefits and use of Triphala for weight loss were first featured on the Dr. Oz Show in the US before it became wildly popular. It helps the body eliminate toxins and rejuvenates the digestive system.

Triphala acts as a colon toner. It strengthens and tones the tissues of the colon. This, in turn, helps control the weight. The colon helps the body by eliminating waste products. It creates a healthy environment where the body can excrete the waste and let go of the accumulated toxins with ease. It helps fight constipation and inflammation of the digestive tract. The only side effect of this is increased bowel movement as it acts as a laxative. It also lowers cholesterol significantly and helps remove water weight, thus reducing bloating. It acts as an energy booster.

Two Reasons Why Triphala Helps You Lose Weight

You may be surprised at just how effective really clearing out your system properly with Triphala is at helping you to lose weight.

Most people who start an effective cleanse using Triphala tea, drop a few pounds quite quickly, just from the amount of crap they are clearing out of their digestive system, particularly the colon.

That’s a good start, but in the long run, a properly functioning digestive system means your body is getting the nutrients it needs more easily, so it doesn’t tend to stimulate hunger as much.

If your body has poor digestion, you may eat a lot of food but not get the important minerals, vitamins and other nutrients you need. Your body knows it requires these substances to operate effectively and stimulates more hunger in an attempt to get them.

This doesn’t change the fact that you’re not absorbing the nutrients you need. But you end up eating more food anyway, usually high carbohydrate processed foods. These simple carbohydrates are absorbed very quickly and unfortunately are very easily converted to body fat.

Using Triphala regularly can help break this weight gain cycle by getting your digestive system work properly to absorb the nutrition you need, and reducing the amount of hunger you feel due to a lack of nutrition.

At the same time, it’s very important to eat more vegetables, greens, berries, nuts, seeds, and fruits, along with healthy protein sources.

Triphala Tablet

Have one tablet per day with warm or cold water before you go to bed. For support and rejuvenation, taking the tablets at night before bed is best. For detoxification, it is most effective to take on an empty stomach either before bed or upon awakening. If you have a sensitive stomach, it may be more comfortable to take the tablets with food or after you have eaten.

It is fine to drink this tea right away but soaking it for a few hours makes tea taste better. It’s better to take the tea on empty stomach. Add one teaspoon of raw organic honey for even better weight loss results!

Promotes a Healthy Gut

It is believed that Triphala promotes the motility of the gastrointestinal tract. Proper digestion and absorption of nutrients lead to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles located in the stomach and intestines. When the gastrointestinal nerves are not functioning normally, health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome may occur. Doctors often prescribe prokinetic drugs for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

Susan Westfall, a former PhD student at McGill and lead author of the study, says the idea of combining Triphala and probiotics comes from her long-standing interest in studying natural products derived from traditional Indian medicine and their impact on neurodegenerative diseases.

“At the onset of this study, we were hopeful that combining Triphala with probiotics would be at least a little better than their individual components in terms of physiological benefit, but we did not imagine how successful this formulation would be,” says Westfall, who is now a postdoctoral fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, USA.

Considering the broad physiological effects of this formulation shown in the fruit fly, Prakash hopes their formulation could have interesting applications in a number of human disorders such as diabetes, obesity, neurodegeneration, chronic inflammation, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and even cancer.

With age, the body becomes less efficient at handling environmental stresses leading to a myriad of physiological imbalances including elevated inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic dysregulation, and mitochondrial damage. However, maintaining a healthy gut microbiota through the use of probiotic and prebiotic supplements can delay chronic disease onset and promote longevity by simultaneously affecting each of the main triggers of aging.

Antibacterial Effects

It is believed that Triphala has anti-bacterial properties. In one study, the researchers found evidence of antibacterial activity against various types of bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori, bacteria associated with the development of gastritis, ulcers and stomach cancer. Triphala inhibited the growth of Streptococcus. In particular, it has been shown that rinsing the oral cavity using Triphala extract creates a protective effect indicating a potential role in dental care.

Antioxidant and Antitumor Effects

It is believed that Triphala has antioxidant and antitumor properties.

Triphala stimulates the immune system and thus helps prevent recurrent upper respiratory infections. It stimulates gastric secretion and improves digestion. Because of laxative and antimicrobial action, Triphala helps with constipation, flatulence, gas and bloating.

Triphala Side Effects

Triphala is generally considered a safe herbal preparation, yet it may cause some minor side effects similar to those caused by high fiber foods or supplements, such as loose stools, gas, and bloating. It should also not be used by pregnant women.

Do Not Take Triphala If You are taking Cytochrome P450 (CYP) substrate drugs: Triphala may increase the risk of side effects of drugs that are metabolized by enzymes CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 in the body.

The Verdict

Triphala alone is not enough to help you lose weight. It is not a magic pill or powder that you take before going to bed and wake up the next morning and 20 lb are gone. Triphala will flush toxins from your system and may increase results gained from reduced caloric intake, exercise, and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Remember that question at the beginning of my article? Do you know why so many people try to lose weight and fail miserably? Yes, that one. Well, because they approach weight loss from the wrong angle. If a person thinks he/she can eat junk food all day, not exercise and then pop the pill or drink a cup of tea and expect the results, what do you think is going to happen? It’s kinda obvious they doomed to fail.

Using Triphala regularly can be very helpful to clean your gut and assist you in your journey to lose weight but everything else is up to you now.

Do you want to take action, change your life, break that vicious cycle and start feeling great?

If yes, click here and let me show you how to start with Triphala today!

  1. I have been looking for herbal remedies and supplements to help balance and improve my gut flora.

I have found a few things which help but nothing that really lasts.

I will give Triphala a try because a healthy gut bacteria can sort out a lot of physical and mental issues.

What can you mix it with or is it best to take it on an empty stomach?

Is it possible to add it to cooking, vegetable soup perhaps?

Thank you for an enlightened article and I have learnt a lot.

    1. Hi there and thank you so much for your comments. Definitely, give Triphala a try because it works wonders.

As far as when to take triphala depends on what do you take it for and also if you have a sensitive stomach or not.

If your stomach is sensitive you can take tablets with food or after you ate, otherwise take it before bed or as soon as you get up in the morning. As far as adding triphala to soups, I never heard of that but you can buy a Triphala liquid extract and add it to lemon water or juice.

I hope I answered all your questions, please feel free to contact me if you have more. Cheers

  2. Hi David,

Does Triphala Pills have a bad taste to them?  I have been struggling with weight loss for years and only have an about 20 pounds to lose. Which would you say is better to try if you have never tried Triphala before Tea or Pills.  I really don’t think I could do the powder.

    Thanks

    Ann

    1. Hi Ann and thank you for your feedback. Great question, YES Triphala tastes awful. So if you can’t tolerate the taste you can use capsules. But the traditional way to ingest Triphala is as a tea, but not all of us can stand the bitter and astringent taste. However, over time our mouth adjust to this weird taste. It is really up to you what to choose.

Thanks again and hope to see you often on my site. Cheers

  3. Thanks for this very thorough and well researched post on Triphala. This herbal supplement sounds amazing with its anticancer and antioxidant properties. I think that it is just the thing I need to help detox my system. I’m not overweight, I eat good healthy foods that contain fiber and I exercise. But I still have a lazy gut so I hope that Triphala will help me to become more regular.

    1. Thanks Suzie for your comment and taking time to read my article. I hope you got all the info you need to make a educated decision. I think this supplement is great for lazy gut. Please let me know the results.

See you soon on my site 🙂
