What’s causing depression?

Absolutely all processes in your body are controlled by the brain. The cells of your brain receive information from all organs and systems, analyze this information, develop the necessary reaction and transmit the corresponding orders to the various organs of your body through the nerve cells.

Depression (like any other disease) arises from a combination of different factors. These factors lead to malfunction of certain parts of the brain and disruption of neural connections. In other words, the brain ceases to give the” right orders for a clear operation of your nervous system, which leads to depression, and then to more serious consequences, which were noted above. For the most part, depression is caused by quite simple and understandable reasons:

  • overwork
  • the pressure from other people
  • impossibility to achieve the desired for a long period of time
  • failures in personal life or career
  • hormonal disbalance
  • disease
  • the death of a loved one
  • side effects of pharmaceutical drugs
  • loneliness
  • drugs and alcohol

How to treat anxiety and depression?

depression,pills,anxiety

There is a couple of ways to do it. You can take antidepressants but I think you will agree with me when I say antidepressants cause dependency.

Nausea, headache, fever, trembling, panic attacks and hallucinations. These are but a few of the symptoms that depression-struck patients risk facing when they discontinue their treatment with SSRI drugs.  It sounds like substance addiction and that is exactly what it is scientists behind a study from the Nordic Cochrane Centre say.

What are SSRI drugs? Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are some of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants available.

Like many pharmaceuticals prescribed to treat depression, these drugs must be taken consistently, often for several weeks, in order to reach their maximum effectiveness for the treatment of depression.

Many people, who are constantly depressed and anxious, find solace in the uncontrolled use of antidepressants. However, practice shows that this is not the best way out of this situation.

Doctors have come to the conclusion that depression is very treatable with herbs. And this is a well-founded opinion because medicinal plants have long been recognized as an effective method of healing from various illnesses. It is from nature, that all medicinal components came to pharmacology.

Methods, recipes, folk remedies for depression are excellent auxiliary methods to the main pharmacological treatment and psychotherapy. The use of medicinal plants contributes to more rapid elimination of the debilitating signs of the disorder.

Step 1. Health Activities

warm bath,depression

  • To improve performance, increase physical endurance in the morning, you can take a warm (not hot) bath, adding a few drops of natural lemon essential oil to the water. Fresh lemon aroma invigorates and restores energy potential. Lemon essential oil activates the efficiency of the brain and increases concentration.
  • In the first half of the day when depression shows, a warm bath with rosemary essential oil. Essential oil from the leaves and flowering branches of rosemary increases resistance to stress, eliminates uncertainty in their abilities. Rosemary oil stimulates the body’s defenses and helps to cope with high loads.
  • Since depression often coexists with insomnia and can reward a person with irritability. For soothing and tonic baths, the ideal remedy is an infusion of poplar leaves or buds. Poplar infusion has on the nervous system expressed sedative and relaxing effect.
  • The folk remedy for depression-warm baths with the addition of infusion of spruce or pine needles. Extract of pine needles helps to eliminate the negative effects of stress, helps to get rid of insomnia.
  • The relaxing effect will have a bath with a few spoons of natural honey. Honey restores energy and gives strength. This natural product is able to quickly relieve nervous tension.
  • You can add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the bath. Lavender oil normalizes the functions of the nervous system. It is successfully used in insomnia, neuroses and other disorders of the neurotic level. The use of lavender essential oil is recommended for general weakness, fatigue, loss of strength.

Step 2. Break A Sweat

fitness,exercise,depression

Scientists say, that more physically active people reported a better general feeling of excitement and enthusiasm than less-active people. Exercise may reduce stress and help you achieve a better night’s sleep. That’s why your favorite fitness routine can be an incredible addition to your depression treatment plan.

Research on depression, anxiety shows that exercise can benefit the psychological and physical state of mind and can also help improve mood and reduce anxiety.

Need an emotional lift? A trip to the gym or a quick 30-minute walk can help. Physical activity accelerates various brain chemicals that will leave you feeling happier and more relaxed.

Step 3. Healthy Diet

depression,meal,diet,healthy diet

Diet plays a very important role in peoples well-being. There is definitely a link between what we eat and depression. A diet that includes a lot of plants, fruits, and veggies, whole grains (unprocessed), seeds and nuts, with some lean proteins like fish and yogurt. Eating foods that are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, protein, and fatty acids is key to keeping your brain in good working order.

Avoid things made with added sugars or flours (like bread, baked goods, cereals, and pasta), and minimize animal fats, processed meats, sugary drinks, and deep-fried food.

If you are not happy, try to revise your daily menu. It is known that certain products from depression increase the concentration of serotonin in the blood — the hormone of happiness. Here are some products that help most effectively against depression.

Chocolate (especially dark) relaxes and brings inner harmony.

Almonds nourish the nervous system (good and other nuts — peanuts, cashews, walnuts, and cedar).

Seafood– are known as great antidepressants.

Cabbage, broccoli fights anxiety, stress, relieve panic, especially useful for women, children and the elderly.

Dairy products eliminate the effects of stress in the body and help to maintain optimism (milk, kefir, cottage cheese, hard cheeses).

Bananas are known antidepressants that help to keep a good mood.

Meat (lean beef, lamb, Turkey, rabbit) and liver help to cope with depressed mood, increase endurance, strengthen the nervous system.

Oatmeal removes toxins, helps fight insomnia, normalizes the nervous system, energizes.

Blueberries, strawberries— proven antidepressants and antioxidants.

When it comes to what we eat, quality really matters. In order to function properly our brain needs vitamin C, vitamin D, and B vitamins and as far as minerals, we need selenium, magnesium, and zinc. There’s evidence that foods with omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon and tuna) and folic acid (such as spinach and avocado) could help ease depression. Learn More.

  1. Hello thank you so much for this detailed post. My mother has just been diagnosed with depression and I am very new to this area. Your advice and tips are very helpful and I am going to look further into what would be the best dietary supplements for her. I am really interested in the Lemon Balm as we have a tone of it growing around my house during the summer and it might be nice to brew a nice calming tea from it and see if that helps her (and me). Thank you again for all of this helpful information

    1. Thank You so much Heather. You are the first to comment on my article I spent a lot of time to research on this subject and really appreciate it. All the best to you.

  2. Very informative article on depression. A lot of people suffer in silence, and most don’t understand it. It’s good to know there are alternate methods besides drugs to help people. I think the drugs do more harm than good.

    Regards
    Court

  3. Great post! I know that when I feel depressed it really helps to get outside and walk around a bit. I also do journaling.
One thing that I have noticed is that I get depressed a lot faster when I do not get enough protein, especially meat. While I do not eat a lot of beef, I do find that poultry and fish do not give me the same effect as beef or pork (which help me more), which just goes to show that people need different things 🙂
I also use a lot of lavender essential oils, but my favorite is a citrus blend that just makes me feel happy whenever I inhale deeply from the bottle.

  4. I have heard of a lot of these supplements for depression. However, one that I believe needs to be on the list is Vitamin D. I know that in the winter we don’t as much Vitamin D and people tend to get more depressed in the winter?

What are your thoughts on Vitamin D and depression?
