King Of Mushroom

Chaga birch fungus is essentially a parasitic organism that infects trees. It grows mainly on the bark of birch trees. The appearance of Chaga reminds of a piece of burnt charcoal. However, this feature does not prevent Chaga to be an incredibly healthy product that is capable of a complex effect on the human body. We are going to learn about what is Chaga mushroom, why people call it “King Of Mushroom” and “Gift From God”.

chaga mushroom

You can see it on the trunks of birch, mountain ash, elm, alder. But they collect it only from a birch, as it most often parasitizes on this tree. Chaga mushroom has the appearance of growths of irregular shape with a dense texture and a black surface (often cracked). It affects mostly old, but “live” trunks; on young trees almost never occurs.

There are two more layers under the black, uneven and cracked surface of the birch fungus. The first one, brown in color, has a very dense consistency, on a fracture it is grainy. The second layer, on the contrary, is very loose and spreads deep into the trunk. Looks of Chaga are not pretty but there are so many useful substances in it! Contains elements such as potassium and sodium, calcium and zinc, iron and silicon. There are in the composition of the fungus and manganese, contributing to the activation of many enzymes. The ash content of the Chaga mushroom is 12-15 %.

History Of Chaga

Our ancestors knew about the usefulness of birch fungus for health. Mention of it can be found in the writings of the famous Avicenna. Native Russians, as well as the Siberian Khanty people, were supposedly the first people to enjoy the health benefits of the Chaga mushroom. The ancient Russian chronicles contain evidence of the miraculous healing with his help of Prince Vladimir Monomakh, who suffered from lip cancer.

More recently, in the 1950s, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the famous Russian author and Nobel laureate, became fascinated with Chaga benefits while performing research for one of his books. His novel, Cancer Ward, references the healing properties of Chaga mushrooms.

“He could not imagine any greater joy than to go away into the woods for months on end, to break off this chaga, crumble it, boil it up on a campfire, drink it and get well like an animal.”

~Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Cancer Ward (1968)

Called the “Gift from God” or the “King of Herbs”, the Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) has been respected for thousands of years throughout Russia, Korea, Eastern and Northern Europe, Northern United States, North Carolina mountains and Canada.

Since the 16th century, Chaga has been used in folk and botanical medicine throughout Eastern Europe.

The name Chaga (pronounced “cha-ga”) originates from the Russian word for mushroom (czaga) which is derived from the word for fungus. In Norway Chaga (kreftkjuke’) translates to “cancer polypore” in reference to its fungal appearance and alleged medicinal properties.
